Downtown Festival & Art Show Poster Features the Creative Work of Jim Harrison

The 35th Annual Downtown Festival & Art Show is proud to present this year’s poster and t-shirt image created by Gainesville graphic artist Jim Harrison. This all-new design, created exclusively for the Downtown Festival & Art Show, features Harrison’s signature typographic flair and a bold graphic composition that balances the festival’s unique atmosphere of art and music with an icon of Gainesville’s natural beauty. A continuation of the artist’s commitment to celebrating the nature of the Gainesville community, the design symbolizes the mix of nature and culture that the Downtown Festival has come to embody.

Jim Harrison is an award-winning graphic designer, creative director and visual artist. His design studio, MetaVisual, specializes in branding and visual communications for business, and he also helps to guide strategic creative efforts as the creative director for The Agency, an integrated strategic communications firm within UF’s College of Journalism and Communications. His graphic work has won numerous Gold ADDY awards, been featured in multiple solo exhibitions and is in the collection of the Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Division. Harrison is also a past recipient of a prestigious Sappi Fine Paper’s “Ideas That Matter” grant.

A resident of Gainesville since 1986 and alumnus of Santa Fe College and UF, Harrison has focused his work whenever possible on celebrating Gainesville in all its splendor. In addition to numerous campaigns and creative efforts for clients across the city, Harrison created a series of private works inspired by produce crate labels. The Gainesville Fruit Company was a decade-long exploration of Gainesville’s cherished natural, cultural and architectural landmarks, recreating classic produce packing graphics in a “faux-vintage” style. Having retired the series in 2015, he is enjoying Gainesville’s visual renaissance and is seeking out new opportunities to continue contributing to the visual discourse by shining a spotlight on all Gainesville has to offer.
